The hawthorn is used to treat cardiovascular disease since antiquity, but it is only the beginning of the twentieth century we began to seriously consider its therapeutic properties. Treating mild heart failure. The effectiveness of hawthorn has been demonstrated for treatment of minor cardiac weakness and moderate (stages I and II), but not when the disease has reached an advanced stage.

Determination
On the label. Choose standardized extracts containing 2% or 3% flavonoids or 18% to 20% procyanidins. The hawthorn is also sold as a tincture, capsules and tablets made from the flowering or fruit.

Mild heart failure :
Standardized extract (from 2% to 3% flavonoids). Take 300 mg to 900 mg per day in three divided doses.

Standardized extract (18% to 20% of procyanidins). Take 160 mg to 180 mg per day in two or three doses.

Continue treatment for at least six weeks. It may take up to six months before the effects of the plant will make full sense.

Precautions

Attention. The treatment of heart failure should be done under medical supervision. Self-medication is not recommended.

Prudence
The safe use of hawthorn during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established beyond a reasonable doubt.
